Cardano (ADA) is considered as a third-generation cryptocurrency and is currently among the top 10 cryptocurrencies on the market. Cardano was launched in 2017. Where previous generation blockchains are prone to high transaction fees and low TPS (transactions per second) due to certain design limitations, Cardano is built from the ground up to provide a truly decentralized, low fee, high TPS network solution. Cardano aims to improve the speed and overall capacity of its network in several ways. At the forefront is ADA's own consensual protocol, Proof of Stake (PoS), nicknamed Ouroboros. Designed with efficiency in mind, Ouroboros significantly reduces network energy costs - especially compared to the Proof of Work (PoW) mechanism - without sacrificing security.

Cardano Mining

Cardano works on a proof-of-stake algorithm, instead of the often used PoW (Proof-of-Work). The Ouroboros protocol was designed by a talented cryptographic team of five academic institutions led by Professor Aggelos Kiayiasom of the University of Edinburgh. The main innovation is a modular and flexible design, enabling the composition of multiple protocols to increase overall functionality and security. At the same time, it eliminates the need for energy-intensive calculations that may be typical of Proof-of-Work. The level of security demonstrated by Ouroboros is comparable to the security level of the technology on which Bitcoin works.
